John Farley lived in Gulval all his life from 1889 until 1974.  He was a carpenter and cabinet maker. He volunteered in World War One, serving on the Western Front, including Passchendaele.  He was wounded twice, once by shrapnel, and once by gas.&#13;
&#13;
He was choirmaster in Gulval Methodist Chapel for more than fifty years, and a member of the local Temperance Movement.&#13;
&#13;
Williams is one of the most frequently recurring names in the Gulval registers.  In the early 19th century James Farley married Elizabeth Williams of Gulval.</text>
