The family lived in St Just, where her mother had a shop, and her brother had an ice cream shop. Her father Herbert (who was a cousin to the three Richards brothers, photographers) served as a gunner in the First World War. The family were involved in St Just carnivals and Herbert made some of the floats. He was also involved in raising funds for building the clock tower.
