Description
Datetree was a brand new British steam collier/cargo ship owned by the Tree Steamship Company. It was only three months old, having been built in early 1914 by the Antwerp Engineering Company.
On June 25, 1914, while carrying a cargo of coal from Barry, Wales, to Brest, France, the vessel ran aground on the treacherous Brisons Rocks.
The ship broke its back and split in two, resulting in a total loss.
The distinctive diamond shapes on the masts were part of the equipment used for hauling coal, and were used on other collier ships.
